A classic trio performed on the Blues For Allah album (1975). Help on the Way remained basically unchanged throughout the years, however Slipknot! always made for some of the Dead's most interesting and jammed out instrumental sequences. Franklin's Tower was sometimes paired with other song's, often in the first set, but was best in it's original design, coming on the heels of Slipknot. HSF was played from 08-13-1975 to 10-11-1977 consistently, it was revived on 03-25-1983 thru 09-12-1985...brought back during the Warlock's shows 10-08-1989 and remained in the rotation until it was last played on 06-22-1995.

Best Versions

08-13-1975--The first version with lyrics remains true to the album cut and is played with confidence and energy
06-14-1976 spirit of 76'
05-09-1977--classic
06-09-1977--my favorite version of 1977, huge slipknot, great quality recording
10-11-1977--from the so-called "primal" Dead show (as called by Dick Latvala):$, definitely check it out, good raw energy, Garcia is on
05-15-1983--best version of the 83' revival, Garcia smokes classic riffs throughout and in Franklin's he pours it on...
10-08-1989--Warlock's shows, back after 4 years, very well played
06-14-1991--terrific (Welnick actually does some good shite on this one)
09-10-1991-with B. Marsalis
06-28-1992--great show opener
08-22-1993--Garcia burns on his new guitar (great Lesh riffs)
09-22-1993--awesome quality recording, band is tight and play with precision

I think that the 8/13/75, 5/9/77, and 10/11/77 are really incredible. I mean MIND BLOWIN'STUFF!! 6/14/76 and 2/26/77 come to mind as well. I am not too wild about post 77 versions, although 6/24/83 is a nice one, and I finally got to see it live on 12/31/91, but I know it wasn't their best.

I wish that later versions would have included an extended take on the Help solo like the older ones used to (after "I was blind all the time I was learning to see"). One run thru just keeps me wanting more! Those '77 versions build and build, repeating that portion of the tune to stellar degrees (I like 2/26 and 5/9/77). I also like the 6/19/76 version. Not stellar but something deliberate, creepy and haunting about it that brings me back every now and then. I think this triad worked very well in the '90s. 3/30/90 is sweet, a show opener that was included on disc 2 of the Without A Net release. Don't forget the Help/Slip/Fire on 9/20/01 for novelty's sake. Not to cross streams here, but I love what Ratdog does to this tune.

6.10.76- Slipknot melts. 6.17.75 is an interesting proto-version (no singing in Help On The Way).

I also enjoyed 4.12.83 in Binghamton, my first HSF.
